2. DON’T TELL ANYONE I WEAR DR. MARTENS

Influenced by the sub-cultural history of Dr. Martens as part of pride and protest, I created a brief history of the shoe and queerness on leather, inspired by the signature style of DM’s.

This project was for a university project on the platform Information and Systems. We were exploring the concept of diagrams, through various short briefs, I was led to the focus of Dr. Martens as an input.

The design process involved multiple iterations, each leading me to my final outcome of a tactile map piece, exploring the histroy of Dr. Martens and butch lesbians. As this was a personal project for me, I included a short publication of other examples of ‘queer’ clothing, which I gathered from my peers.

Using the visual language of both the Dr. Martens brand and punk protest influences, I construsted a publication-like narrative surrounding my topic, including quotes and illustrations.

While, my content changed slightly in the process of this project, my visual language stayed constant. It was important to me that my input was recognisable in my output.
